Cruising under Sail - 2013 and 2014
navigare necesse est; vivere non est necesse.
In the spring of 2013, Saorsa II embarked upon an extended cruise. The cruise as completed was of the longest duration and greatest distance of any undertaken by Her to date. In a period of fourteen months, She saw almost 6,000 nautical miles pass 'neath Her keel.
After launching in early May, She left Her home berth on Lake Ontario and headed for the sea via the St. Lawrence Seaway and River. She took time to explore the Gaspesie before reaching the Canadian Maritimes. Then She ranged south to explore down east Maine and New England before heading further south to New York City. From New York, She rounded Cape May into Deleware Bay and thence into the Chesapeake Bay.
The autumn of 2013 was spent cruising the waters of Chesapeake Bay sampling all the delights of that fascinating body of water. As winter approached, She continued south exploring the Atlantic Intra-Coastal Waterway (AICW) and visited the lovely towns and cities along the way. After arriving in Florida, She rested before heading for the Bahamas. After a month in The Bahams, She sailed directly to Charleston, South Carolina and then made Her way north again to New York City.
Following a pleasant visit in the "Big Apple", She proceeded up the Hudson River and returned to Lake Ontario via the Erie Canal System. She arrived back at Her home port in Whitby, Ontario in mid-July, 2014.
As the cruise progressed, William's cruising journal was e-Mailed to close friends and posted here for others to read. Photos from the cruise will also be made available here. And, you can
